creating your core ideas (brainstorm)
Workshop Chill-Out Music Production – what you will learn
Program of the Chill-Out Music Experience Workshop
The main steps to create an ambient/chill-out music production in Logic Pro
#1. BRAINSTORM SESSION:
Producing chill-out music is a creative process and starts with an idea, whether outlined or not. In this phase it’s about your core ideas, like the atmosphere you want to create and what your track will be about. This can be expressed through melodies, soundscapes, drum sounds, vocal phrases, chord progressions, samples and so on. Within each group, students will exchange ideas in a brainstorm session. At the end of the brainstorm session the initial direction of the chill-out music production including the necessary subsequent steps are outlined by each group.
#2. TURNING IDEAS INTO REALITY:
After the optional basic music theory lesson, you’ll continue to work on turning your ideas into a structured composition. The different elements in the song, like lyrics for vocals or a bassline, are created, rehearsed and adjusted where necessary. This forms the preparation for recording the acoustic elements in the studio the next day.
#3. ACOUSTIC RECORDING AND EDITING SESSION:
After an introduction of the studio-owner, you’ll get to record the acoustic elements for your composition. You’ll be guided by your teacher(s) and the studio-owner on how to proceed. After the recordings are done, we will edit and compile the recordings in order to use the best takes and get rid of unwanted noises and artifacts.
#4. SOUND DESIGN / SYNTHESIS:
You’ll learn how to make your own sounds or adjust existing sounds, like evolving sounds, drones and rhythmic elements. These techniques can also be applied to your own samples and to the fieldrecordings we will make later on.

#5. MAKING FIELDRECORDINGS AND IMPULSE RECORDINGS:
‘Found sounds’ generally refer to sounds that were recorded in nature or captured from other objects. These sounds by themselves are not necessarily ‘musical sounding’, but they can add a real world connection and atmosphere to your music and can be used as an instrument by use of sampling. Today you’ll learn how to make fieldrecordings and impulse response recordings. We’ll take a trip to one of the many beautiful places in Andalusia where you can record away! These ‘found sounds’ are meant to be part of your music production. With impulse response recordings we can capture the reverberation of e.g. a church or cave.
#6. ARRANGING THE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS:
With all the current elements present, you’ll continue to arrange them into a structured composition. Don’t worry if you decided to completely re-arrange your original ideas. That’s part of the creative process.
#7. MIXING THE PRODUCTION:
After arranging the track you’ll learn how to mix the different elements so that a balanced and creative production is formed, which includes the use of different effects (like compression, EQ, reverb and delay) and automation. This will be the first draft of your mix that you’ll create. As elements can still be added and re-arranged, the final mix will be made at the Space Mountain Studios

What to bring?
If you want to learn how to make a production in Logic Pro, it’s highly recommended that you bring a Macbook with Logic Pro and a headphone.
If you mainly want to make a creative, musical contribution and are less interested in the technical aspect of music production, it’s not necessary to bring a Macbook with Logic Pro, but you might bring a musical instrument that you can play.
In order to make field recordings, it’s recommended that you either have a smartphone which is able to record audio (pretty much any smartphone can do that) or a dedicated fieldrecorder.
The most important factor is that you have a passion for chill-out / ambient music. That unites us during this Experience.
Sound University Europe will provide some MIDI-keyboards for students to use during the Experience.
